What Causes TMJ?

Everyone has two temporomandibular joints on either side of their jaw. The TMJ behaves like a sliding hinge, connecting the jawbone to the skull. You need this joint for good jaw alignment and chewing, but sometimes people develop TMJ disorders. What causes TMJ?

Possible Causes

Each case of TMJ is unique and it’s often tricky to pinpoint an exact cause. There might be many factors working together. Arthritis is a potential cause since arthritis can damage the joint’s cartilage. An injury can also damage the TMJ joint. When people experience stress, they sometimes clench their jaws or grind their teeth. In severe cases, this can lead to TMJ. Many grind their teeth at night when they aren’t even aware they’re doing it. Grinding doesn’t always lead to TMJ, but it can make it worse. Your genetic background might also factor into whether you get TMJ. Excessive gum chewing can aggravate a minor case of TMJ and make it worse.

Signs You Have a TMJ Disorder

More often than not, we won’t know the exact cause of your TMJ, but we can recognize it by the symptoms. There are several that point to a TMJ disorder:

  • Jaw pain and tenderness
  • Aching around or in your ear
  • Pain in one or both of the TMJ joints
  • Aching pain in your face
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Pain or difficulty when you chew
  • A popping or clicking sound when you chew or open your mouth
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
