At Middletown Commons Family Dental, we love to treat patients of every age! We take great care to gently cater to the needs of your children and set them on a path to dental health for life. Once your child has their first tooth or first birthday, they are ready to come see us! Call to schedule an appointment for their first exam when it is convenient. For kids of all ages, there are ways to make each dental appointment easier and more fun. Here are some ways that you can help your child prepare for their next dental checkup.
Brush Up on Their Technique
We aim to make dental appointments for kids fun and educational. That said, there is still a certain degree of teeth cleaning that will be done when your child comes in. Our job is easier when they’ve stayed on top of their daily dental routine. Make sure your child is brushing twice a day for two minutes each day. For children under the age of five, you can help them and make sure their technique is good. Encourage and reward them for taking great care of their teeth. It will pay off!
Talk to Them About Dental Health
Kids that have dental anxiety are often afraid of the unknown. Talk to them about your dental experiences. Tell them that you don’t mind going to the dentist and that you love having healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. Answer their questions honestly and gently.
Reduce Sugary Snacks & Drinks
Dental appointments will be easier if your child doesn’t have a cavity that needs to be filled. Sugar is the main culprit when it comes to kids and cavities. Be sure that they are eating lots of nutritious foods. Veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains are preferred. Keep items like candy, cookies, crackers, cakes, and processed carbohydrates to a minimum.
Get Appointment-Ready
In order to reduce dental appointment jitters for both of you, be sure to arrive to your appointment 15 minutes early. This will ensure you both have time and aren’t feeling stressed from rushing. Allow your child to bring their favorite toy, tablet or book to help them feel entertained and at home.
We Look Forward to Seeing You
We look forward to seeing you and treating your child with the same care we treat our own. If you have any questions about your child’s dental health or next appointment, don’t hesitate to call us. We are happy to help!
