If you’ve been dealing with extreme pain in an isolated area, or even sudden onset of tooth sensitivity, you should come in for an exam at Middletown Commons Family Dental. Dr. Ward will want to check your tooth for signs of infection because if left untreated, an infection in your tooth could lead to an abscess or even the need for a tooth extraction. We would much rather you keep your natural tooth, so if we find an infection, we may recommend a root canal procedure. Don’t worry, though – they aren’t as painful as their reputation would suggest, and we make sure you’re comfortable the whole time.
Root Canal Procedure
We know that the term “root canal” sends shivers down most patients’ spines, but they really aren’t as bad as you think. In fact, we numb the area around the tooth so well that you’ll really only feel some pressure while we work. After that, the whole process is pretty straightforward:
- We drill into the tooth to get to the root canals where the infection usually is.
- We remove the infected tooth pulp and clean out the canals.
- We use antibiotics to kill any remaining infection and help prevent future infection.
- We seal the root canals to provide further protection.
During this first procedure, we’ll also get you fitted for a permanent crown. While we wait for the crown to be made, we’ll place a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Once your new crown is ready, come back in for the final placement. Your tooth will be good as new, and the crown will give it extra strength so you can treat it just like any of your natural teeth.
